Presence Film
The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities in this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems protective of her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He plays an egotistical celebrity playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to appear at a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to investigate the alleged criminal, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, evening, on Channel 4
The Black Phone
The director's contained scarefest remains effective even without a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has made the youth frightened. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to present the real-life figure with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
Black Bag
The current week's second offering from the filmmaker delivers a intelligence thriller as tight like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mental battle of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
