The Everton midfielder received a warm ovation from his Everton teammates after issuing an apology for his extraordinary red card during Monday's victory at Manchester United.
Gueye earned the distinction of being the initial Premier League player to be dismissed for hitting a teammate in nearly two decades when he struck Michael Keane during the match. Everton's performance was remarkable as they competed with a man down for 85 minutes, including stoppage time, to secure David Moyes' initial victory at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in multiple tries.
'My first apology goes to Michael Keane,' Gueye stated on his accounts. 'I accept complete responsibility for my actions.'
The Senegalese international did not get an chance to converse with the manager or his teammates at the interval. Afterwards, with the away dressing room celebrating after the narrow victory, the 36-year-old requested to speak to the whole team and Keane specifically.
Gueye could still be punished by Everton despite the manager's admission that he likes his team members fighting with each other. Moyes has a standard disciplinary procedure for red and yellow cards, including financial penalties, which is expected to be implemented in Gueye's case.
The Merseyside club could be without their key midfielder until the new year. Gueye will serve a three-game ban against Newcastle United, Bournemouth and Forest but might be selected for Africa Cup of Nations duty by his national team before he becomes eligible to play against Chelsea on 13 December.
'Passions can sometimes overflow,' he added. 'But nothing justifies such behaviour.'
Meanwhile, the Manchester United defender claimed his team of lacking urgency in Monday's defeat, which halted their winning streak at five games.
The Red Devils head to Crystal Palace for the weekend noon kickoff. 'Our upcoming match is absolutely crucial,' said De Ligt. 'We have to bounce back from this performance.'
