European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
