High-ranking Labour Party figure Ed Miliband has urged the party to move beyond internal tensions after Prime Minister Keir Starmer directly said sorry to Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP over negative briefings coming from Downing Street.
The internal unrest started after media stories circulated about hostile briefings from the Prime Minister's supporters targeting Streeting. Despite early efforts to minimize the matter, the talk between the PM and the health minister apparently followed a different turn.
The Prime Minister expressed regret to Streeting, the media have been advised. The conversation was brief, and they did not address the chief of staff, whom the PM is now under pressure to dismiss.
In his morning media appearances, Ed Miliband stressed the need for the party to direct attention on national priorities rather than internal conflicts.
Look, I think the media briefing has been unhelpful, no question.
But my call to the party today is straightforward, which is we need to focus on the nation, not our internal matters.
We were given a major mandate last summer, a important opportunity to transform our country. And we have a serious obligation.
