Administration Reveals Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
