Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster final round of play.

Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff victory over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Decider

That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
