A minimum of 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to the city's international airport is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives said no less than 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Community members have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police stated more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the operation, along with multiple guns.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.
